Technology doesn’t help

Sometimes, it is a little bit ironic for me to hear that “technology” doesn’t any help and solve people’s problems at all.

 

1.

For this weekend, one of colleague will move to different apartment from current apartment. And they will move by themselves. It’s difficult for them to use moving services since it is expensive. We know that moving takes time and stressful. She refused other people’s offer to help since she said that she doesn’t want them to be injured by their stuffs if there are some possibilities. Even worse, their new apartment doesn’t have elevators even their room is third floor...

Nowadays, we can catch a Taxi by smartphone, but it is still tough to move the stuffs by hand, and no one can solve these kinds of problems, unless you pay extra expensive money in Silicon Valley. In Japan, moving services are not so expensive due to hard price competition among moving services companies.

 

2. These days, we have heavy rain and storm in San Jose every day. When we visit one customer, we need to walk 10min. outside from parking, since customer’s office is very huge. Even in 21st century, we don’t have any alternative technology for umbrella. My cheap umbrella was broken due to strong winds....  my clothes was dried soon due to dry humidity compare to Japan though... still we don’t have the Marty’s jacket like as “Back to the Future2”, even it is 2019. (BTTF2 future scene was 2015.)

 

3. This week, it is quite cold due to storm, and air conditioning system at our office in San Jose was broken. To be honest, the system doesn’t work from last November, and we keep asking office management company to fix it, however their answer is always that “oh, parts of system are not delivered yet”, something like that. 

And finally on this week, temperatures of office became below 62F. (15C) due to the cold weather. Finally, our director said that “ We can’t work here unless the air conditioner will be fixed. Working environment should be maintained by efforts, and we pay money for renting this office, but office management company doesn’t ’t fix the air conditioner even we keep asking to fix it.” And she asked top management to say the official complain to office management company. Then, she allowed us to work from home or other warmer place. Actually, we have laptop and cell phones, so if we don’t have meeting at office, we can work outside from the uncomfortable office technically, and we don’t need to keep standing at such tough conditions. In fact, on that day, I was shaking due to cold temperatures even in office...I don’t like cold weather even I was born in February. When we had a meeting with the visitors, visitor should be uncomfortable due to cold temperature  in meeting room, we still keep wearing the jackets and sweaters even in the office not to catch a cold...

Anyway, what I would like to say is that technology is not help in this case too, even if we pay expensive money. We needed to help by ourselves somehow. Eventually I got out from office and I worked at cafe with WiFi and electrical power on 2 days. (Oh,  different Technology helped me in this case, though.)
